When we talk about property, it is not just the physical things such as homes, structures, vehicles, money etc that are protected by law. Other kinds of property which are intangible in nature also exist. They are termed intellectual property and these are also secured by the law. Patents, trademarks and copyrights are the three primary categories of intellectual property.
Copyright is an intellectual property right that is granted by law to an author or any other kind of creator for a unique composition or development. Copyright safeguards all forms of artistic creations including melodies, films, videos, designs etc in addition to original writings. Understanding carried forward from generation to generation in a particular sect; exclusive and secret ingredients or recipes which go into making popular products like Coca Cola; and geographical position based descriptions, which denote certain products like Champagne, are some examples of this kind of intellectual property.
These three types of intellectual property are quite different from each other for the most part but also have a few similarities. All three are provided for by law in a manner that allows the holders of the property to opt for legal recourse against the infringer and get compensation for misuse.
